Moving Away

One of the girls that I tutor is moving to Florida! I wish she was staying for a few reasons. One being that she is very sweet and talkative, and a joy to be around. She is involved in dance lessons and has competed in gymnastics meets, almost qualifying to go to state! She was literally one point away from qualifying! And she loves the color pink. Her bedroom screams pink, and her mom converted the garage into a gymnastics practice room, and all of the equipment is pink! 

Another reason that I wish she was staying is that she is terrible at remembering how to spell! For example, I'll make a list of spelling words, like the one I did this week (I've been tutoring her twice a week) that were all words that end in either -er or -or. Dancer, doctor, and so on. I'll write the list of words in her notebook and have her write them on the same line and say the letters as she writes them. I'll have her do that twice. Then we'll flip to a blank page and I'll say one word from the list at a time, having her write them down. She will literally get them all wrong. Like, she spelled doctor "doktr." 

I have her write the word correctly again on the same line as the word she spelled wrong. It was my last session with her earlier this week, so I ended the spelling lesson by explaining that when a word ends in the rrr sound, it's either going to end in an -er or an -or, never just an "r" by itself. 

She's homeschooled, and I don't think she's getting enough education or one-on-one help. I wish I could continue being her tutor, I really think I could help her a lot. But there's nothing I can do except suggest to her mother that she needs to find her a tutor when they get to Florida. I'll be praying for them as they get settled in their new home.

Starting High School!

 Okay, so this boy isn't one that I actually tutor. He's autistic, and I just make sure he gets up in time for school and make him breakfast, then take him to school. Today is his first day of high school!  I asked him if he was excited about starting high school, and he said no. I asked him if he was nervous, but the thing he was worried about was that he wouldn't see any of his middle school teachers anymore. And he had a new class schedule to learn, and wasn't sure he would know where each class was, and how to get there on time.  I told him to just check in the office if he didn't know where to go next. I remember starting high school, even though it was so long ago. It took me about a week to feel confident about knowing my schedule and where my classrooms were.  I'm sure he'll do fine once he adjusts to a new school. "I Never Get Homework"

 I was just working with the second-grader that I tutor, and her task was to figure out which words fit into five given sentences. We are using a workbook that I don't let any of the kids write in, because they need to share. So I told her just to read the sentences and point to and say the words that go in the blanks. But she asked me for a piece of paper, so I gave her one. She started out by writing the words that would go in the blanks. Then she started writing the sentences, blanks included. I told her that she didn't need to do all of that, all she needed to do was to read. But she told me that she was in second grade and never got any homework, only with her mom and me. So she wanted to write the sentences out.  I thought it was cute of her to say that. I noticed that she was crowding the lines as she wrote, though, and leaving letters out of words. So I found myself thinking that she does need practice writing sentences. It's good to see what areas she needs practic...

From a Cereal Box

 Hey! It's been a while! Happy 2026! I hope the year is starting off well for you! Things are good here, other than having covid once and a cold today!  Anyway, I found a new game for the kids I tutor to play! I noticed a checkerboard pattern on the back of the cereal box, of the cereal I was eating one morning. I thought "hmmm. . . I think I could turn that into a good game for tutoring." So I drew in some lines and made a path for our players to follow, how far we go each team determined by saying the word correctly, then rolling the die. Whoever gets to Finish first wins! It's quite a success, as I can use it for being able to recognize words, spell words (without seeing them), identifying letters of the alphabet, or correctly completing math equations. It's very versatile. Game ideas can be found just about everywhere you look - you just need to think creatively!
